Must read

Guwahati, Aug 10: In a landmark development for Arunachal Pradesh’s judiciary, Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai today inaugurated the new building of the Gauhati High Court’s Itanagar Permanent Bench at Naharlagun. The ceremony was attended by Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju and Arjun Ram Meghwal, Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court Ashutosh Kumar, Supreme Court judges, and senior jurists from across India.

Calling it “a momentous day in the judicial history of Arunachal Pradesh and India,” Chief Minister Pema Khandu hailed the Rs 250-crore facility — spread over 19,000 sq. m — as a “symbol of hope, accessibility, and unwavering pursuit of justice.” The foundation stone was laid on August 12, 2018, and despite pandemic disruptions, difficult terrain, and high logistics costs, the project was completed in under four years.

Khandu noted the state’s rapid expansion of judicial infrastructure, from just two courts in 2016 to 33 functional courts today, including dedicated NDPS courts in Tezu, Khonsa, and Yupia. He stressed that the new High Court complex will improve access to justice, expedite case resolution, and reinforce the rule of law in the frontier state.

“The inauguration of this court is the fulfilment of a long-cherished dream,” Khandu said, adding that Arunachal Pradesh is committed to strengthening its justice delivery system from the High Court to the grassroots.
