Tura, May 22: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma laid the foundation stone for the construction of the new building of PASF-Abong Noga College in Tura on Friday, while inaugurating a newly built conference hall.

The project signals another step in accelerating higher education infrastructure in the state. The project which is being executed as a CSR backed program involves an investment of Rs. 8 crore, with Rs. 5 crore already being released, through a partnership involving Dorf Ketal Chemicals India Ltd., P. A. Sangma Foundation and Ira Gurukul Educational Trust. “Education is very important to the development goals of our state, because in the final sense everything that we are trying to do must improve the lives of people,” said Meghalaya CM, Conrad Sangma. “The problem in the state’s education sector now is to see not just to enhance the access but also the quality”, Sangma further said at the program held in New Tura along with senior ministers and local representatives.

According to the CM, “the state has been steadily investing in education, welfare of teachers and infrastructure” since the government considers “human resource development one of the primary priorities as the state has one of the youngest populations.”

PASF-Abong Noga College which was established in the year 2022 by P. A. Sangma Foundation and later affiliated to NEHU, carries forward the legacy of late Purno Agitok Sangma as well as Abong Noga, who was an icon in the Garo history. The investment in higher education would help to enhance the education sector and access the quality of higher education in the region.

Meghalaya government in the recent past has significantly been focusing on the education, rural access and skilling of the youth, with sustained investments in infrastructure, teachers and education centers, although concerns around the quality of learning and employability remains, the efforts toward the education sector seems more focused now than a few years back.
