Congress leader faces backlash for singing Bangladesh’s national anthem at party meeting in Barak Valley

Must read

Guwahati, Oct 29: A Congress leader has triggered a political storm across the Barak Valley after allegedly singing Amar Sonar Bangla, Ami Tomay Bhalobasi — the national anthem of Bangladesh — during a Congress Seva Dal executive meeting in Sribhumi.

The leader, identified as Bidhu Bhushan Das, former chairperson of the Sribhumi Seva Dal unit, reportedly began his speech “with the rendition of the song written by Rabindranath Tagore in 1905 during the partition of Bengal under British rule.”

Das’s act has stirred fresh controversy on social media, drawing sharp reactions from political opponents.

State Minister Krishnendu Paul and BJP MLA from Patharkandi said, “I have received reports of a Congress leader singing Bangladesh’s national anthem at a party event. Congress can do anything — everything in that party is bizarre. They don’t even know when or what to sing. I will watch the video and urge the police to investigate the matter and take appropriate action.”

Responding to the criticism, Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi said, “Bidhu Bhushan Das, an 80-year-old senior member of our party, sang the Bengali song Amar Shonar Bangla, a beautiful composition by Rabindranath Tagore. Unfortunately, the BJP cell is criticizing this, claiming it to be a song of the Muslim community and the national anthem of Bangladesh. They fail to understand the historical and cultural significance of the song. It was written by Rabindranath Tagore, a Nobel laureate and one of India’s greatest poets. Why can’t we sing a Bengali song that celebrates our shared heritage and literary legacy?”

He further added, “The BJP has always claimed to respect Bengali culture, but in reality, it has repeatedly insulted the Bengali language and its people. Their recent actions once again expose their ignorance of Bengal’s rich heritage, the legacy of Rabindranath Tagore, and his philosophy. The truth is, the BJP only remembers the Bengali-speaking community during elections for their votes but has never truly tried to understand their culture, language, or depth of thought.”
