Guwahati, Oct 29: A week-long Forensics K9 Workshop was held at Kaziranga National Park (KNP) from October 24 to 30, aiming to make wildlife crime investigations more scientific and field-ready through specialized dog-handler training.
The workshop brought together five forest K9 handlers from the Assam Forest Department and the Assam Forest Protection Force (AFPF), along with three trained contraband detection dogs.
“This was a handler-focused workshop designed to build the confidence, knowledge, and field readiness of those working with detection dogs, while also improving the dogs’ own skills,” said a KNP official.
The sessions covered advanced obedience, scent detection techniques, wildlife forensics, canine first aid, and mock patrols with crime scene simulations — all aimed at enhancing coordination between handlers and dogs during real-life investigations.
Organized in collaboration with the Scent Library for Conservation, founded by Kartik Thevar, a conservation cynologist and K9 trainer, the workshop emphasized developing national standards for wildlife detection dog training aligned with Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) K9 Cell guidelines.
The Scent Library’s work — including the creation of a scent database and use of scientific training protocols — helps ensure that evidence collected with canine assistance can stand up in court, making wildlife crime probes both legally robust and scientifically credible.
“The workshop concluded with performance evaluations and strategy discussions to refine future deployments,” the official added. “It represents another step toward making India’s conservation K9 programs more professional, science-driven, and effective in protecting endangered species.”
