Congress’s wipeout a sign of needed introspection, says UDP MLA Mayralborn Syiem

Shillong, Aug 1: With the defection of its lone legislator, Ronnie V. Lyngdoh, to the National People’s Party (NPP), the Congress has lost all representation in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly—a historic low for the grand old party in the state.

Commenting on the development, United Democratic Party (UDP) MLA Mayralborn Syiem described the Congress collapse as part of the natural cycle of politics, while urging the party to reflect on its decline.

“Every political party in a democracy experiences both rise and fall. Regarding the Congress party’s current situation—though I was once an official member of the Congress—I would say we must wish all members well, regardless of which party they join,” Syiem said.

He avoided direct criticism of the Congress leadership but stressed the need for introspection. “It is not my place to speak on the Congress leadership. It is a national party, and I believe it is fully aware of its current state in Meghalaya—where it once was and where it is today. This should be a moment for the party to introspect, to evaluate both its leadership and the local issues that may have led to its downfall,” he noted.

Syiem added that legislators often change parties to better serve their constituents. “Intentions behind such moves are often to address people’s issues. As for me, I am now with the UDP, and my priority is to serve my constituents as mandated by the Constitution. I also extend my best wishes to all fellow legislators, regardless of party affiliation.”

The exit of Lyngdoh, who was Leader of Opposition, marks a turning point in Meghalaya’s political landscape, with the Congress—once a dominant force—now completely absent from the Assembly.
