Nongpoh, Aug 1: Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem has raised serious concerns over the increasing movement of suspected illegal immigrants into Meghalaya, warning that Assam’s ongoing eviction drive has heightened fears in border areas. He said the porous boundary between the two states makes Meghalaya especially vulnerable to infiltration.
“The issue of illegal immigration is nothing new. It concerns every citizen, the government, and legislators. It is not limited to Meghalaya but extends across eastern India—be it West Bengal, Bihar, Nagaland, or Assam,” Syiem told reporters.
Referring to the eviction drive in Assam, he said, “Reports suggest the evictions target settlers staying illegally, many believed to be from Bangladesh. This has created fear among our people, as anyone can slip across the border at any time.”
The MLA said he had already consulted the district administration and raised the matter with the state government, calling for a strong mechanism to check the influx. “We must ensure that this process does not disturb the peace and unity of our state. Reports and incidents flagged by NGOs and local Dorbar Shnongs are a matter of concern,” he added.
Syiem urged district administrations, Dorbar Shnongs, Seng Samla, Seng Longkmie, Seng Kynthei, and civil society organisations to remain vigilant. He also condemned those giving shelter to illegal immigrants. “Anyone who protects or patronises illegal settlers fleeing from a neighbouring state should not be allowed at all. If there’s smoke, there’s fire—we must be vigilant,” he stressed.
On the Border Security Force’s concerns over infiltration from Bangladesh, Syiem admitted there were lapses. “How could they enter? It means someone is facilitating and giving shelter. We must find and stop such patronage immediately,” he said.
Reiterating the need to safeguard Meghalaya’s social fabric, he added, “The peace and harmony we enjoy must prevail. Our traditional institutions and way of life should remain untouched, making our state a heaven for its people.
