The CM met the young athletes at the SAI Complex in the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) campus in Shillong.
Meghalaya government has undertaken a massive program to screen for talented young athletes from across the state by going to schools in remote areas and holding trials under the STAR Talent Identification Program. After this, the promising young athletes are brought to Shillong and screened again at the SAI complex. The top performing athletes then are selected for the Super Elite Pathway Program and trained by highly specialized coaches in the field.
“As you can see these are nine sports persons who have been selected out of more than 15,000 people who were screened throughout the state. And they are, as I said, as the name suggests they are in the Super Elite category,” he said after meeting them.
He underscored that the state movement has decided that it wants to move scientifically and in an organized manner to see that Meghalaya starts getting medals at the national and international level, which is why a systematic program has been developed.
“And today these athletes, who are there in front of us, are being trained by one of the best coaches in the one of the best programs, and given all the facilities and at the same time not compromising on their education,” CM Sangma informed.
He further stated that the athletes are being given very specialized program, and expressed, “I am sure that with all the facilities and more importantly their talent and their hard work, I’m very sure that we will come out successful.”
“And one day, if not all, some of them will get medals for the state and make our state and make our country proud in the Olympic Games also,” he added.
At the same time, he told the athletes that talent is one part but determination to succeed and having disciple are equally important.
“I have requested them that having a talent is one part, but having the determination to move forward in it and having the discipline to continue the hard work is another part… hence, the second part is now dependent on them,” he said.
He was hopeful that the athletes in the top tier category of the program will be disciplined, work hard and come out successful at the end of the program.
