Shillong, Nov 23: The day has finally come to know who has won the battle of pride for the prized constituency of Gambegre. Counting of votes for the Gambegre bye-election began at 8 AM at the office premises of the Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills, Tura.
There are 6 candidates in the fray: NPP candidate Dr Mehtab Chandee A Sangma, Congress candidate Jingjang M Marak, All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) candidate Sadhiarani Sangma, Bernard N Marak of the BJP and two independents – Sengkrabirth M Marak and Jerry A Sangma.
The seat fell vacant after Saleng A Sangma was elected as the Lok Sabha MP from Tura earlier this year.
A total of 14 tables will be used for the counting and results declared in 4 rounds.
As per the instructions of the Election Commission of India, the Postal ballots will be counted first at the counting table of the Returning Officer and after 30 minutes, the EVM counting will commence at the counting tables.
As per instructions of the Election Commission of India, a three-tier security cordon has been set up at the Counting Centre.
The bye-election was held on November 13, with voter turnout of 90.93 percent.
