Kohima, July 10: Nagaland MLA and Advisor for Science & Technology, Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu, on Friday called for greater participation of women in politics, urging them to overcome fear, build confidence and claim their rightful place in decision-making bodies.
Addressing a seminar on “Empowering Women in Politics and Leadership with Divisional and Assembly Constituencies”, organised by the NPF Central Women Wing at the party’s central headquarters in Kohima, Nienu said women must move beyond being the backbone of families and communities to becoming active participants in governance.
He said the seminar was centred on three themes—the audacity to rise, overcoming fear and claiming a seat at the table. While acknowledging the significant contributions of women in homes, schools, businesses and churches, he noted that their voices remain underrepresented in political decision-making.
“Women should not see themselves as guests in these spaces. They are equal partners in building our society,” he said, adding that leadership requires courage, preparation and a commitment to public service.
Nienu urged women to actively engage in village councils, development committees, municipal bodies, political parties and the State Assembly, saying these institutions shape the future of communities.
Encouraging aspiring women leaders to understand their constituencies, speak with confidence and lead with integrity, he said, “Leadership is not about waiting for permission; it is about preparing yourself to serve and having the courage to answer that call.”
He concluded by asserting that women’s participation in politics is essential for inclusive governance and lasting social change, saying their place in leadership is “not a favour, but an opportunity to serve and make a generational impact.”
