Five-year recruitment road map envisages opening avenues in government departments, universities, medical colleges and state undertakings

Guwahati, July 10:The Assam government has unveiled what could become its largest-ever employment drive, setting a target of two lakh jobs over the next five years across government departments and the wider public sector ecosystem under its flagship ‘Nijuktir Natun Diganta’ initiative.

Presenting the first full Budget of the NDA government’s second term, Finance Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah said the state had already surpassed its earlier promise of one lakh government jobs by making 1.64 lakh appointments over the past five years. He described the new target as the “next phase of Assam’s road map towards opening up new vistas of employment for its people.”

The recruitment drive, he said, will extend well beyond government departments, covering public sector undertakings (PSUs), universities, government-run medical colleges, statutory bodies, societies, Sixth Schedule councils and companies with substantial state government shareholding, significantly widening the scope of public sector employment.

A high-powered Task Force headed by the Chief Secretary has already been constituted to prepare the recruitment roadmap. The government will also explore the creation of new posts in the police, revenue and disaster management, education, health and family welfare, forests and environment, and other revenue-generating departments, while ensuring timely promotions to create more vacancies at the entry level.

The announcement is in line with one of the NDA’s key promises during the 2026 Assembly election campaign, when Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma pledged to create two lakh government jobs. While Finance Minister Mallabaruah said the Budget would be anchored in fiscal discipline and inclusive growth, the Chief Minister described it as the government’s five-year economic blueprint with employment generation as one of its central priorities.
If implemented as envisaged, the recruitment drive will rank among the largest public sector hiring exercises undertaken by any state in recent years, underscoring the government’s strategy of combining welfare measures with long-term employment generation.
