Shillong, July 10: The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), East Jaintia Hills, on Friday conducted a legal awareness programme at Khliehriat Market to educate the public on laws safeguarding the rights of women and children and the legal remedies available to victims of abuse and exploitation.
Organised under the aegis of the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA), the programme focused on key legislations, including the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, and the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956.
Deputy Legal Aid Defence Counsel, DLSA East Jaintia Hills, R. Lyngdoh, who was the resource person, explained the objectives and key provisions of these laws, highlighting the rights and protections available to women and children.

She urged the public to report cases of domestic violence, child sexual abuse, trafficking and other forms of exploitation without delay, while outlining the legal penalties for offenders and the remedies available to victims.
Lyngdoh also called on citizens to remain vigilant and work collectively to create a safe and supportive environment for women and children by preventing violence and exploitation.
Participants were also informed about the free legal aid and assistance available through the DLSA to eligible persons and were encouraged to avail themselves of these services whenever required.
