Shillong, July 6: A husband and wife were arrested after police seized 116 vials of suspected heroin during an anti-infiltration and anti-narcotics operation in Shillong on Monday.
The operation, carried out jointly by the Anti-Infiltration Directorate (AID) and the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF), involved checking 35 individuals as part of an intensified drive against illegal infiltration and drug trafficking.
Police said several people fled on seeing the security personnel. During the operation, ANTF personnel apprehended Rahim Ali (43) and Jaibanu (35), who were allegedly found in possession of 116 vials containing suspected heroin weighing 14.42 grams.
The suspected contraband was seized in the presence of independent witnesses.
Officials said all 35 individuals checked during the drive produced identity and residence documents issued by other states. The documents are being verified with the respective state authorities.
A case has been registered at Sadar Police Station under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and further investigation is underway.
