Dibrugarh, Aug 3: What initially appeared to be a case of dacoity in Barbaruah has now been uncovered as a cold-blooded murder, allegedly orchestrated by a man’s own wife and teenage daughter.
The victim, 52-year-old Uttam Gogoi, a respected businessman from Lahon Gaon in Barbaruah, was found dead in his home on July 25. Police initially suspected a robbery, but further investigation revealed a shocking plot hatched within his own household.
On Sunday morning, Dibrugarh police arrested Gogoi’s wife, their 16-year-old daughter, and two others—21-year-old Dipjyoti Buragohain and a 17-year-old boy—just eight days after the crime.
According to police, the teenage daughter, a Class 9 student, was allegedly in a relationship with Buragohain. The mother-daughter duo reportedly paid him and his minor accomplice money and gold jewelry to carry out the murder, staging the scene to resemble a dacoity. Police have since recovered the gold jewelry.
“They tried to pass it off as a robbery, but forensic evidence and inconsistencies in their statements exposed the truth,” said Dibrugarh SSP Rakesh Reddy.
The revelation has shaken the peaceful neighbourhood of Lahon Gaon. Shocked locals took to the streets of Barbaruah demanding strict punishment for the accused.
Police say the exact motive remains under investigation. “We are questioning the suspects to establish the motive behind this brutal crime,” SSP Reddy added.
