Williamnagar, Aug 9: Heartless humans, bereft of any feelings for the life of a child, abandoned the body of a newborn infant on the roadside in Williamnagar town sending shockwaves across the town and the Garo Hills region.
The body was left on a gravel road in the Terrace Gittim road not far from a watchtower of the Williamnagar District Jail situated at Dawa Gittingre locality of the town.
The lifeless body of the newborn was abandoned without any clothes or covering and it was fortunate no street dogs had targeted it.
According to East Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Bruno A Sangma, people from the locality alerted police early Monday morning after sighting it lying still on the gravel without even a piece of clothing.
“Around 6 AM I got the information from the area. The police team visited the place of occurence and inquest was done. The child is reportedly 4-5 months old but some say 5-6 months. Doctor’s report is awaited and we are registering a case and those involved in it will be booked as per law. The investigation is going on,” stated the SP.
There is a strong suspicion that the newborn was delivered in some hospital or clinic because its umbilical cord had already been cut and a surgical clip to seal the end was left behind.
“Our investigation will unravel the truth. I am shocked such a cruel thing can be done to an innocent child,” said SP Bruno Sangma.
It was sheer luck that the infant’s body was spotted untouched early in the morning and no stray dogs had attacked it.
