Agartala, May 14: Tripura BJP President and newly elected Rajya Sabha Member Manik Saha would be the next Chief Minister of BJP-led alliance government after, in a sudden political development, Biplab Kumar Deb resigned from his post on Saturday.

After the hurriedly called BJP legislature party meeting, Deb announced Saha’s name and announced that he would extend all kinds of cooperation to the new Chief Minister.

The 67-years old dental surgeon-turned-politician on March 31 was elected to Rajya Sabha in the lone seat of the saffron party-ruled North-Eastern state.

Saha, also the Professor and Head of the Department of the Tripura Medical College and B.R. Ambedkar Memorial Teaching Hospital in Agartala, and president of the Tripura Cricket Association, joined the BJP in 2016.

In 2021, Saha, a close associate of the outgoing Chief Minister Deb, became the President of the Tripura BJP Pradesh committee.
