Guwahati, Sept 12: Cachar police have arrested two more individuals posing as MBBS-qualified doctors, intensifying concerns over the alarming rise of fake medical practitioners in Assam.
The arrests bring the total to eight fake doctors nabbed since August in an ongoing crackdown.
The accused have been identified as Nihar H. Mazarbhuiya (35) and Radheshyam Rabidas. They were picked up in two separate operations—one from Borkhola and the other from Jirighat bazar near the Manipur border.
According to Cachar SSP Numal Mahatta, both were practising medicine without any formal qualifications. “They are holding fake MBBS degrees, and we have verified this. They admitted to acquiring the documents through a racket, and we are investigating further,” Mahatta said.
Investigations revealed that Mazarbhuiya projected himself as a senior physician with a postgraduate MD and even ran two pharmacies—Dilshan Drugs and Sania Drugs—where he treated patients under the guise of a qualified doctor. Rabidas, meanwhile, was practising in Jirighat Bagaan, misleading villagers by falsely claiming to be a physician.
Police said the duo faces multiple charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including cheating, forgery, and endangering human life.
Earlier on September 9, two more fake doctors were arrested in Cachar, including one claiming to be a senior gastroenterologist with an MBBS from Kazakhstan.
“The crackdown against fake doctors will continue. Since August, we have arrested eight in Cachar alone,” police confirmed.
