Shillong, Sept 12: The All Meghalaya Upper Primary and Secondary Deficit Pattern School Teachers’ Association on Thursday felicitated the state government for its support to the education sector, at a programme held in the State Convention Centre, Shillong.
The programme was graced by the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K. Sangma, as the chief guest. The guests of honour included Rakkam A. Sangma, Education Minister, Government of Meghalaya; Ian Botham K. Sangma, MLA, 55-Salmanpara Assembly Constituency; THimalaya Shangpliang, Advisor, Education Department; and other dignitaries.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, attending as chief guest, said the acknowledgement by teachers was deeply moving, as leaders and officials rarely expect thanks for fulfilling their duties. Calling the felicitation a “rare moment” without demands or memorandums, he assured that the government will continue working to strengthen education, one of the most complex and long-term policy areas.
The Chief Minister acknowledged the many challenges faced in the education sector, pointing out that issues are often inherited and have persisted for decades.
“Education is not about just improving pass percentages—it is about shaping responsible citizens,” he said, recalling how his late father, a teacher, inspired his own vision for Meghalaya.
Stressing that education is one of the most complex departments—where the impact of today’s decisions is seen only after many years—he assured that the government would continue to pursue solutions that serve both teachers and students.
He reiterated his goal of making the state among the top in the country, with education at the heart of this aspiration.
Education Minister Rakkam A. Sangma hailed the programme as “historic” and praised deficit teachers for their unity and perseverance. He stressed that teaching is about “inspiring, guiding, and uplifting society” and noted that the recognition of deficit pattern teachers went beyond salary issues, symbolising the upliftment of families and communities.
The event also highlighted the long struggle of deficit school teachers, with association leaders recalling that long-pending demands, including allowances and a one-time CRG payment, were fulfilled after 32 years.
Cultural performances, welcome addresses, and memento presentations marked the programme, held under the theme “Honouring Vision, Nurturing Future.”
