Double-engine or double-ghulami?’ Priyanka Gandhi attacks BJP in Upper Assam rally

Must read

Dibrugarh, April 1: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on the BJP government in Assam, accusing it of failing on key promises, including granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six indigenous communities, while unveiling a series of welfare assurances ahead of the Assembly elections.

Campaigning for Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) candidate Lurinjyoti Gogoi in Khowang constituency, where the Congress and AJP are in alliance, Gandhi alleged that the BJP-led government had failed to address unemployment and rising public distress.

“The BJP government has not worked for the people of the state. Unemployment has been rising, but they continue to make claims,” she said, addressing a rally in Dibrugarh district.
Taking a direct swipe at the “double-engine government” narrative, Gandhi remarked that it was, in reality, a “double-ghulami government,” accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of prioritising political allegiance over governance.

She also alleged misuse of welfare schemes, claiming that women beneficiaries under the Orunodoi scheme were being pressured to attend political rallies. “Public money does not belong to the Chief Minister. Schemes should not be used for political coercion,” she said.

Highlighting concerns of tea garden workers—an influential voter base in Upper Assam—Gandhi accused the BJP of failing to deliver on wage hike promises. “They had promised ₹300–₹350 wages, but workers say only marginal increases have been made,” she noted.

Outlining Congress’s electoral commitments, Gandhi promised free healthcare coverage if voted to power and announced that 10 lakh permanent land pattas would be granted to indigenous people. She also reiterated support for granting ST status to the six communities, a long-pending demand in Assam.

Referring to cultural icon Zubeen Garg, she said Congress would ensure “justice” within 100 days, framing it as part of a broader vision for a corruption-free Assam.
Gandhi also campaigned for Congress candidates Bipul Gogoi in Tingkhong and Debabrata Saikia in Nazira, signalling the party’s intensified push in Upper Assam ahead of the polls.
