Guwahati, July 29: In a crackdown on cross-border drug trafficking, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized narcotics worth nearly ₹28 crore in Assam and Mizoram — with one haul concealed so ingeniously that officers had to call in a mechanic to extract the hidden stash.
On July 25, DRI officials intercepted a Mahindra TUV300 in Katakhal, Hailakandi district. Inside expertly fabricated cavities, they discovered 1,813 grams of heroin packed in 160 soap cases and 2 kg of methamphetamine tablets. The concealment was so sophisticated that dismantling the vehicle rrequired a mechanic.
In a follow-up operation the next day, officers intercepted a Maruti Eeco van at Sakei Bangla in Champhai district, Mizoram, recovering another 1,920 grams of heroin concealed in seat cavities.
According to investigators, the narcotics had been smuggled in from Myanmar through Mizoram’s porous border and were being ferried to other parts of the country. Four persons, including two Myanmar nationals, were arrested under the NDPS Act.
Since January 2025, DRI has seized narcotics worth over ₹346 crore in the Northeast, cracking 27 cases, confiscating 25 vehicles, and arresting 48 people.
Officials say the operations highlight not only the growing sophistication of drug cartels operating through the Indo-Myanmar border but also the relentless pursuit by enforcement agencies to dismantle them.
