Dibrugarh, July 28: The tragic death of 7-year-old Tejas Beriwal Agarwal, who fell into an uncovered fire safety tank at the Amba Heights residential complex in Dibrugarh on Sunday, has sparked widespread outrage and calls for accountability.

A postmortem was conducted in Dibrugarh on Monday, after which the body was taken to his hometown of Mariani in Jorhat. The final rites will be performed on Tuesday at the Mariani crematorium.

According to police, the child was rushed to a hospital but was declared brought dead. “An unnatural death (UD) case has been registered at Dibrugarh police station and further inquiry is underway,” said Superintendent of Police Rakesh Reddy.

Residents have accused the owner of Amba Heights of gross negligence. “Why was the fire safety tank left uncovered? It is sheer negligence, and because of it, an innocent life has been lost,” said a resident of the complex.

Questions are also being raised about the role of the Dibrugarh District Development Authority (DDDA), with citizens alleging lapses in enforcing safety norms. “How did the DDDA permit such a building without ensuring basic safety provisions? There was not even a CCTV camera installed. Who is responsible for this death?” a resident asked.

Conscious citizens have urged the district administration to order a thorough inquiry into the negligence that led to the tragedy and to ensure strict enforcement of safety measures in residential complexes to prevent such incidents in the future.
