Dubakh A and Diva Drive emerge champions at Williamnagar Summer Basketball Tournament

Williamnagar, July 12: The “Open-to-All Summer Basketball Tournament,” organized by the Williamnagar District Basketball Association in collaboration with the District Sports Office, GSU East Zone and Surmount Club, concluded with thrilling finals held at the Rongrenggre Government Higher Secondary School Basketball Court.

In the men’s final, team Dubakh A emerged victorious by narrowly defeating Tynrei with a close score of 69-66, while in the women’s final, Diva Drive edged past Salgro 13 from North Garo Hills with a score of 39-34.

The finals were graced by the PHE Minister and local MLA of Williamnagar, Marcuise N. Marak, who attended as the Chief Guest, along with Babira G. Momin, District Sports Officer (DSO) of Williamnagar, and other dignitaries. Spectators were treated to high-energy performances from all four finalist teams, who showcased exceptional skill, technique, and sportsmanship throughout the matches.

In his address, Minister Marcuise N. Marak emphasized the government’s commitment to promoting sports in Meghalaya and commended the Williamnagar District Basketball Association for creating such an opportunity for young athletes. He also highlighted the recent inauguration of the Mawkhanu Football Stadium by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the presence of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and other cabinet ministers, noting that the stadium will play a key role in the upcoming National Games 2027.

The first final of the day featured the women’s teams Diva Drive and Salgro 13. Both teams kept the crowd on edge with a neck-and-neck competition, but Diva Drive secured the win with a final score of 39-34.

The men’s final between Dubakh A and Tynrei was equally competitive, with both sides pushing hard until the final whistle. Dubakh A claimed the title with a narrow victory of 69-66.

Trophies, cash prizes, and certificates were awarded to the winners and runners-up by Chief Guest Marcuise N. Marak, District Sports Officer(DSO) Babira G. Momin, and members of the Williamnagar District Basketball Association.

The Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards went to Riya Thapa from Diva Drive (women’s team) and Meban Shadap from Dubakh A (men’s team) for their outstanding performances throughout the tournament.
