The move aims to clean and update the voter list ahead of future elections
Guwahati, Nov 17: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed a Special Revision of the state’s electoral roll with January 1, 2026, as the qualifying date. The exercise—treated with urgency by the Commission—seeks to update, correct, and clean the voter list across all districts.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the move, asserting that the state government will ensure full support to the process.

In a post on X, Sarma wrote:

According to the ECI communication, the revision will be carried out under strict timelines, with district-level teams instructed to ensure accuracy through verification, disposal of claims and objections, and correction of entries. The Commission has asked officials to maintain transparency and adopt strengthened field-level checks—especially in areas with previous inconsistencies or demographic shifts.
The Special Revision will involve:
* Door-to-door verification in sensitive and border districts
* Removal of duplicate or erroneous entries
* Inclusion of all eligible citizens turning 18 by Jan 1, 2026
* Updating addresses, corrections, and linkage with documentation
District Election Officers and Electoral Registration Officers have been asked to mobilise field machinery immediately. The state government, responding to the Chief Minister’s directive, is preparing to deploy additional manpower to support the revision.
