Elderly woman alleges delay, missing file in ₹1.12-Crore NH land compensation case

Boko, July 11: A 72-year-old woman from Assam’s Boko has accused revenue officials of harassment and negligence after allegedly being denied ₹1.12 crore in compensation for land acquired for the expansion of National Highway-17, despite government approval of the payment.

Addressing a press conference on Friday, Bharti Kalita, a resident of Borpara village under the Boko Revenue Circle, claimed that compensation for her land, acquired by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for the four-lane highway project, has remained unpaid even after she submitted all the required documents in January 2025.

Kalita, the widow of late Parama Kalita, said she possesses valid ownership documents for the land covered under Patta No. 81, Dag No. 141 and that the compensation amount of ₹1,12,71,546 had been sanctioned in her name under the Land Acquisition Act.

She alleged that officials of the Boko Revenue Circle, including the Circle Officer, Lat Mandal, village headman and a former panchayat president, failed to process her claim properly. According to Kalita, following her husband’s death, she should have been recognised as the head of the family for compensation purposes, but the administration instead gave precedence to her son.

Kalita also claimed that a building on the acquired land, constructed in 2001 with official approval, was damaged during the highway expansion. Despite repeatedly approaching the Circle Office, she alleged that no action was taken and was recently informed that her compensation file had gone missing.

The elderly woman said she had moved the Gauhati High Court, which on May 20, 2026, directed the Kamrup District Commissioner to consider her case. Alleging that the order has not been acted upon, she has filed a fresh petition seeking a district-level inquiry into the disappearance of her compensation records and the alleged administrative lapses.

There was no immediate response from the district administration to the allegations.
