Shillong, June 2: The Meghalaya State Disaster Management Authority (MSDMA) has reported significant destruction following squally winds and extremely heavy rainfall between May 29 and June 1, as predicted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The calamity has impacted ten districts, including East Khasi Hills, West Garo Hills, Eastern West Khasi Hills, Ri Bhoi, South Garo Hills, West Jaintia Hills, South West Garo Hills, East Jaintia Hills, South West Khasi Hills, and West Khasi Hills. In total, 49 villages across 23 blocks have suffered damage, affecting over 1,221 people.
The disaster has resulted in the loss of 7 human lives, with four reported injuries and six individuals missing. Additionally, 28 homes have been damaged, while 33 infrastructure units, including roads, have suffered destruction. Agricultural losses have also been recorded, with 0.202 hectares of crops affected.

On June 1, 2025, fresh incidents of landslides occurred in Umskun village and along the Umjari-Umtrai road in Ri Bhoi district. The Public Works Department (PWD) Nongpoh Division has directed contractors to clear the debris at Umskun, while temporary plasiding is being installed at Umjari-Umtrai to stabilize the pavement for safer passage.
Relief measures have been mobilized, with Gratuitous Relief (GR) distributed to affected families in Dehal Bagan and Upper Bagan villages under Umling C&RD Block, Ri Bhoi district. The response has been strengthened by community-driven efforts, as residents rally to support one another in rebuilding what was lost.
Despite the devastation, the resilience of Meghalaya’s communities shines through. A local resident from Dehal Bagan shared, “We may have lost our homes, but we are holding each other up. Together, we will rebuild.”
Authorities urge people to stay vigilant and adhere to safety advisories as relief operations continue. With the monsoon season ahead, Meghalaya braces for further challenges—but its people remain unwavering, standing strong in the face of adversity.
