Must read

Shillong, June 1: The newly wed couple from Indore – Raja Raghuwanshi (30) and Sonam Raghuwanshi (27) – who had come to Sohra (Cherrapunji) for their honeymoon remain missing for 10 days.

The couple has been missing since May 23.

Meghalaya government has engaged almost 50 people, consisting of police personnel, SDRF teams as well as local villagers to search for the couple. In addition, K9 sniffer dogs and drones have been deployed to locate them in difficult to reach areas.

On May 22, the tourist couple arrived at Mawlakhiat village (Elaka Mynteng) on a rented scooty to visit the Double Decker Root Bridge in Nongriat. They engaged a local guide, Bha Wansai, and trekked over 3,000 steps down the gorge to visit the famous living root bridges in Nongriat village, where they stayed overnight at Shipara Homestay in Nongriat, officials said.

They checked out at 6 AM on May 23, intending to return to Mawlakhiat. However, no confirmed sightings of the couple trekking from Nongriat to Mawlakhiat or retrieving their scooty from the Mawlakhiat parking lot were reported, despite heavy tourist activity. On May 24, at 9 PM, the Sordar of Sohrarim reported an abandoned scooty, traced to the couple via E-Challan on May 25 at 2:30 pm. An FIR in, filed by relatives, has been registered, the ADC of Sohra said.

Earlier on May 22, the couple had first entered Manha Homestay at Saitsohpen, Sohra where they left their luggage due to no vacancies and heavy rainfall, providing their name and phone number before proceeding to look for accommodation. However, it was learnt later that they had proceeded to Nongriat.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has assured that the state machinery is doing everything to trace the couple and he is personally monitoring the operation.

However, due to heavy rains across the North Eastern Region and more so in Sohra for the entire past week has made it difficult for teams to move forward or go deeper into forests, near streams and various trekking routes.
