Guwahati, June 1: There is more misery and hardships for residents of Northeast India with India Meteorological Department (IMD) sounding a fresh alert for the region, warning of severe weather over the next five days, with the potential for extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds battering large swathes of Assam, Tripura, and surrounding states.
The first day of June has already brought a deluge: Silchar received a staggering 415.8 mm rainfall in 24 hours which is the highest ever single day rainfall breaking 132 years long previous record of 290.3 mm in 1893.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a combination of upper-air cyclonic circulations and low-level troughs is fueling the unstable weather pattern. A particularly intense zone of activity stretches from central Assam to Arunachal Pradesh, linked to a trough extending from East Uttar Pradesh.
The IMD has warned of heavy, very heavy and extremely heavy rainfall in Assam.
Widespread thunderstorms and lightning are expected across Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram.
The unsettled conditions will persist for at least five days, with no relief in sight.
Widespread flooding has gripped Assam as incessant rains continue to wreak havoc, affecting over 58,000 people across 182 villages in 14 districts, according to the latest government situation report issued this morning.
Key districts hit include Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Golaghat, Dibrugarh, and Kamrup, with 27 revenue circles submerged. The flood has claimed three lives in the past 24 hours—one in Lakhimpur and two in Golaghat. A crucial embankment on the Ranganadi River breached at North Lakhimpur, escalating the crisis.
Rescue operations by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are underway, particularly in Dhemaji, where evacuations began early today. 1,224 people have taken shelter in five relief camps, while relief distribution centres are supplying essential items including over 100 quintals of rice and more than 500 litres of mustard oil.
Urban areas haven’t been spared either, with 20,988 people affected in parts of Guwahati, Silchar, Dibrugarh, and Dalgaon. Landslides have also struck Hailakandi and parts of Kamrup Metro. Landslides have claimed five lives already in Guwahati.
The state government continues to monitor the situation, urging residents in vulnerable areas to stay alert and cooperate with rescue teams.
