Tura, May 29: Sporting fervour swept across Tura as the first-ever School Games 2025 officially commenced on Thursday at the Matchakolgre L.P School field. The three-day event promises a thrilling display of young athletic talent from across the Tura region.

Organized by the District Sports Office, Tura, in collaboration with the District Administration, the first-ever inter-school games in the district emphasizes a clear goal of fostering strong sports spirit among students and identify future state and national-level participants.

The opening ceremony was graced by Vibhor Aggarwal, Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills. In his address, Aggarwal underscored the critical role of these games in promoting sports in the region and recognizing local athletic talent. He proudly recalled the success of Meghalaya team in the recent Indo-France football tournament, an achievement that brought immense pride to the state. He concluded his speech with powerful words of encouragement, imploring the students to aim for international representation and not confine their aspirations to district or state levels alone.

The games have drawn an impressive participation of around 500 students from 17 schools across Tura, vying to compete in five sports disciplines: Taekwondo, Basketball, Volleyball, Table Tennis, and Badminton.

The competitive spirit was immediately evident as events kicked off at various venues following the inauguration. Don Bosco College Higher Secondary Section witnessed energetic Taekwondo bouts featuring participants from 9 schools. The Matchakolgre Basketball Court buzzed with excitement as 10 schools battled it out on the court in intense basketball matches.

Meanwhile, the Matchakolgre L.P School field saw fierce Volleyball contests, with 10 schools vying for supremacy. The District Indoor Sports Halls in Hawakhana played host to the Table Tennis competitions, featuring boys and girls from 9 schools competing in both Under 15 and Under 17 categories. The Badminton events are scheduled to take place on Friday, May 30th, at the indoor sports halls in Hawakhana.

In an interview with Hub News, District Sports Officer of West Garo Hills, Saljagring Marak, emphasized the importance of such events and highlighted the crucial support and generous financial aid from the district administration, which has been instrumental in organizing this inaugural event and enabling the inclusion of these initial disciplines, with plans to expand to more sports like athletics and football in the future.

The School Games 2025 is a testament to the commitment towards fostering sports excellence in the Tura region. Beyond the thrill of competition, the event aims to provide a nurturing environment for students to develop their skills and cultivate higher levels of sportsmanship and professionalism. By encouraging active participation in sports and promoting a healthy lifestyle, the games are poised to contribute significantly to the overall development of young individuals and bring out the best in the region’s promising young athletes.
