Itanagar, Feb 23: In an important step towards resolving their decades-old boundary dispute, the first official border pillar between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh was installed at Seijosa in Pakke-Kessang district on Sunday.
The installation marks a major milestone in efforts by both state governments to bring closure to one of the Northeast’s longest-pending interstate boundary issues. The move is being viewed as a breakthrough that could pave the way for lasting peace and administrative clarity along the disputed stretches.
The development follows the Namsai Declaration signed in July 2022, which laid down a structured roadmap for addressing the border disagreement. Since then, joint regional committees comprising ministers and senior officials from both states have conducted field visits, examined historical records, and held consultations with local communities to arrive at mutually acceptable solutions.
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu described the installation of the Seijosa pillar as a landmark achievement. He said the step signifies a transition from prolonged uncertainty to greater clarity and stability for residents living in border areas.
Khandu further stated that the Seijosa pillar would serve as a model for completing the remaining demarcation process, strengthening inter-state cooperation and fostering harmony, development, and confidence among border communities.
The installation was carried out under the close supervision of authorities from both states. The event was attended by the Deputy Commissioners of Arunachal Pradesh’s Pakke-Kessang district and Assam’s Biswanath district, along with senior police officials, community leaders, and village heads.
