Guwahati, Feb 23: India received international recognition at the 79th British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards as the Manipuri film Boong won the Best Children’s & Family Film award.
Directed by Lakshmipriya Devi and produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani, the film stood out among global entries in the children’s cinema category.
During her acceptance speech at the ceremony organised by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, Devi delivered an emotional message, drawing attention to the ongoing violence in Manipur.
Beginning her speech with “Khurumjari! Greetings to everyone,” she described the journey of the film as “the last few steps to reach the summit of a mountain we never knew we were climbing in the first place.” She thanked the BAFTA jury for recognising what she described as a “very small film” with “big love.”
Highlighting the context in which the film was made, Devi said Boong is rooted in Manipur — “a place that is very troubled, very much ignored, and very unrepresented in India.”
