Mystery continues in IIT Guwahati student's death, unanswered questions remain

Guwahati, July 27: The mystery surrounding the death of a third-year BTech student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati continues, with police still investigating the circumstances that led to the tragic incident. The institute has appealed to the public not to speculate until the probe is completed.

The student, identified as Ritesh Raj Singh from Odisha, allegedly fell from the fifth floor of a campus building on Sunday afternoon. He was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Reports said Singh, a Computer Science and Engineering student, had secured an internship with Goldman Sachs and was an active member of the institute’s Coding Club.

Expressing condolences, IIT Guwahati said it is extending all possible support to the bereaved family and reiterated that it has strengthened its mental health support system through professional counselling, peer mentoring and round-the-clock psychological assistance.

While investigators work to establish the facts behind the incident, the tragedy has once again brought the spotlight on student well-being in India’s premier institutions. Mental health experts have long emphasised that alongside academic excellence, campuses must invest in emotional resilience, accessible counselling and early intervention systems to help students navigate the pressures of highly competitive environments.

As the investigation continues, the incident serves as a sobering reminder that nurturing brilliant minds must also include protecting their emotional well-being.
