FKJGP meets CM Conrad, urges him to intervene after complaints over the safety of drinking water supplied by PHE in Shillong

Must read

Shillong, Oct 3: In the recent findings of the Federation of Khasi JaiƱtia and Garo People (FKJGP) residents of 44 localities within Shillong city are drinking unsafe water as per the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

Last month, leaders of the FKJGP took the initiative to collect water samples from 46 localities within Shillong and sent them for testing to the State Food Testing Laboratory, Commissionerate of Food Safety at Pasteur, after concerns were raised by the public about the quality of drinking water.

Raising concerns, the FKJGP leaders met Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma, urging him to intervene with this finding of the Federation concerning the quality of drinking water being supplied across the state by the PHE department.

FKJGP president, Dundee Khongsit informed that the Report of water samples received from the State Food Testing Laboratory, Commissionerate of Food Safety, Pasteur Hills, Shillong depicts that out of the 46 (forty-six) different localities tested, 44 (forty-four) localities show presence of ā€œColiform and E. coli organismsā€ with ā€˜low pH value, high turbidity, and iron contentā€™ above the prescribed limit; which clearly indicates that the water collected and tested in these 44 (forty-four) localities is an ā€œunsafe waterā€ as per FSSAI standards. Hence, continuous consumption of such water can be detrimental to human health, added the FKJGP president.

Khongsit further noted that the detection of low pH value in these water samples collected and tested indicates that the water is ā€˜acidicā€™ in nature.

As per FSSAI standards, the normal pH value of drinking water ranges from 6.5 to 8.5 respectively. Below 6.5, the water is said to be acidic in nature, further informed the FKJGP president.

The FKJGP urges the government to kindly address this public concern at the earliest and take necessary steps to rectify the issue to ensure safe and clean drinking water to our people.
