Tura, Jan 18: The Forest Department on January 17 carried out a coordinated raid-cum-patrolling operation in parts of West Garo Hills, leading to the detection of illegal sand and earth mining and the seizure of timber and heavy machinery.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, enforcement teams targeted the Gumaijhora and Chibinang–Chanupara (Gopgopara) areas. The operation was jointly conducted by the Forest Department, led by the Assistant Conservator of Forests, along with the District Administration headed by a magistrate and the Police, reflecting a firm stance against unauthorised extraction of natural resources.
In the Gumaijhora area, officials inspected sites suspected of illegal earth mining and collected written statements and photographic evidence for further enquiry. Illegal sand mining was also detected along a nearby stream. Although those involved fled the site on the arrival of the authorities, extraction tools were seized.
Officials later traced a JCB machine allegedly used in the illegal activity to its owner, and a summon has been issued for formal verification.
In the Chanupara (Gopgopara) area, an animal cart carrying timber logs without valid permits was intercepted and seized. The enforcement team also disrupted an illegal earth mining operation, resulting in the detention of one JCB, one dumper truck loaded with earth, and one tractor.
All seized vehicles have been taken to the Hollaidonga Range Office. The landholder and vehicle owners have been summoned for enquiry.
Forest officials said a detailed investigation is underway to ascertain the ownership of the seized machinery and the source of the timber, adding that similar enforcement drives will continue in the district.
