Former Arunachal MLA Kapchen Rajkumar trampled to death by wild elephant

Itanagar, July 9: Former MLA Kapchen Rajkumar was trampled to death by a wild elephant while walking from Deomali to Namsang village in Arunachal Pradesh on Wednesday.

His body was recovered the same morning from the site of the incident.

“I am deeply saddened to hear about the tragic passing of Late Kapchen Rajkumar, former MLA from Tirap, who fell victim to a very unfortunate incident. His dedication to serving the community and his contributions to our society will always be remembered,” Chief Minister Pema Khandu wrote in a Facebook post.

He added, “Late Kapchen Rajkumar’s commitment to the welfare of the people and his relentless pursuit of progress for Tirap will leave a lasting legacy. It is a profound loss not only for his family and friends but for all those whose lives he touched through his work.”

“As a mark of respect and to support the bereaved family during this difficult time, necessary instructions have been issued to process the ex-gratia grant. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones. May they find strength and comfort in the cherished memories they hold of him.”

Born on April 15, 1960, in Namsang village to Late Wangmai Rajkumar, former Acting Chief of Namsang, he served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly from the erstwhile Khonsa North Assembly Constituency during 1985–1990.

He pursued his early schooling at Ramakrishna Mission School, Narottamnagar, Deomali, and later attended Government Higher Secondary School, Khonsa. He also completed a Commercial Pilot Training Course at Safdarjung Airport, New Delhi.

A veteran politician, Kapchen Rajkumar was widely respected in the region.

According to family sources, his death is suspected to have occurred early Wednesday morning following a wild elephant attack between Namsang and Deomali.

His last rites will be performed tomorrow at his native village, Namsang.
