Shillong, July 9: Meghalaya is scaling up exports of certified organic produce in a bid to help farmers secure better prices.
The state government has signed a strategic Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Bengaluru-based Mother India Farms to scale up exports of certified organic produce, beginning with the Kew variety pineapple.
Facilitated by MEGNOLIA, the agreement connects Mother India Farms with Tomonpo Anglong Organic Farmers Producer Company Ltd., a Ri-Bhoi-based collective of nearly 300 farmers. The company will fully finance and manage organic certification, internal control systems, training, and marketing—at no cost to the farmers—while offering premium prices based on quality.
Commissioner & Secretary of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Vijay Kumar D, said, “This partnership strengthens our mission to increase farmer incomes through global market access. We’re committed to streamlining certification processes and supporting farmer-producer groups across a variety of organic crops.”
Mother India Farms CEO R. Durairaj added, “We see great potential in Meghalaya. With certification support from FoodChain ID, we’re confident the state’s organic produce can meet international standards and tap premium markets.”
Tomonpo, formed under the MOVCD-NER scheme, currently manages over 500 hectares and produces up to 800 metric tonnes of pineapples annually, supplying major buyers like Mother Dairy and Reliance Fresh. The group also cultivates organic ginger, Khasi mandarin, black sticky rice, banana, and guava.
Notably, the MoA comes just ahead of the Meghalaya Pineapple Festival 2025.
