Kohima, July 18: The Viswema Union Kohima (VUK) on Saturday organised a social work drive along Vizol Road in Kohima to honour the memory and legacy of former Chief Minister of Nagaland, Late Vizol Angami, who hailed from Viswema village.

The initiative was undertaken as a tribute to the late statesman, after whom the road was named by the Government of Nagaland in recognition of his contributions to the state.

According to the Union, this was the first time such a social work programme had been organised in his remembrance. The drive also sought to promote community participation, civic responsibility and the preservation of the legacy of one of Nagaland’s prominent leaders.

Late Vizol Angami served as the Chief Minister of Nagaland from 1974 to 1982 and is remembered for his leadership during a crucial period in the state’s development.

Known affectionately among the Naga people as “the Pilot,” he had served as an airman during the Second World War before entering public life.

During his tenure as Chief Minister, he was regarded as a leader who connected closely with the people and worked towards strengthening governance and development in the state.

His public service and humble background left a lasting impression on the people of Nagaland, with his legacy continuing to be remembered years after his passing in 2008 at the age of 94.
