Tura, Mar 8: In an endeavour to promote menstrual awareness amongst adolescent girls, MLA of Gambegre Dr Mehtab Chandee A Sangma has initiated a campaign by organising several programmes in schools within Gambegre.
The campaign is part of International Women’s Day on the theme “Accelerate Action”. The intervention supported by Chief Minister’s Special Grant (CMSG) aims to educate young girls on menstrual hygiene practices and the transition to womenhood.
The programme held at Mellim Deficit Secondary School in the South West Garo Hills District saw participation from over 120 students. Similar programmes were held at Daren Agal Secondary School, Kherapara UP Secondary School, Gonchudare Secondary School and Gambegre UP Secondary School.
Close to 1000 reusable pads were distributed today. The campaign will continue as part of the International Women’s Day and the target is to distribute reusable pads to as many as 10000 beneficiaries amongst adolescent girls and low income group women.
“The campaign is to educate and equip our students and young women on menstrual hygiene practices, care and how to guide young women as the embrace transition to womenhood”, said Dr Mehtab Sangma talking about the initiative.
“The program focused on addressing the critical issue of menstrual hygiene, particularly among girls aged 11 to 18, spanning classes six to ten”, she added.
The distribution of reusable pads was accompanied by detailed explanations in the local language, ensuring that the information was easily understood.
The leaflets provided further guidance on proper hygiene practices, empowering the girls to manage their menstrual cycles with utmost care.
This initiative serves as a powerful example of how community-driven programs can address critical issues and promote the well-being of women and girls.
The reusable pads are being manufactured in different units of Shubham Charitable Association, Shillong. The pads are made with breathable and comfortable materials and has BIS certification. Hundreds of local women have been involved for the production of the pads.
