Garo Hills junior teachers strike over threat of dismissal

Tura, Jan 13: Teachers working in dozens of government schools across the five districts of Garo Hills on a contractual basis who are under the radar of dismal from their jobs, due to recent government measures, have risen in unison to protest demanding a status quo after holding a rally in Tura on Tuesday.

A vast number of the affected teachers, numbering a couple of hundreds, who belonged to the All Garo Hills Lower Primary Contractual Teachers’ Association and the All Garo Hills Contractual Upper Primary School teachers Association, joined the protest against their impending dismissal from service.

The protests are being supported by various student and social organizations of Garo Hills, such as the Garo Students union, the Garoland State movement Committee and the A’chik Holistic Awakening Movement.

According to the affected teachers, they have been angered and disappointed by the government’s failure to rectify past errors.

 “We joined the teaching profession and have been teaching students in schools for more than ten years. Only now, the government deems it necessary to terminate us? Where will we go from here? Question several teachers affected by the decision.

The affected teachers are demanding that their services be allowed to continue with the regularization of their service in the near future.
