Boko, May 31: A 26-year-old man, Epish N. Sangma, drowned in the swollen Gijang River (also known as Singra River), a tributary of the Brahmaputra, at Maspara village in Meghalaya’s Rambrai-Jyrngam constituency, near Boko’s Hahim on Saturday.

The tragic incident occurred amidst widespread flooding of rivers in Kamrup and Goalpara districts, caused by heavy rainfall in both Assam and Meghalaya.

Sangma, along with his brother-in-law, had gone fishing with a traditional net when they attempted to cross the river. He was swept away by the strong current and drowned.
Meghalaya Police promptly responded to the scene and, with the assistance of local residents, recovered Sangma’s body.

Following the incident, Rambrai-Jyrngam constituency, constituency MLA R.G. Momin immediately visited the spot to offer condolences to the grieving family.
