Gaurav Gogoi accuses Himanta Biswa Sarma of “inciting genocide” against Muslims

Must read

Guwahati, Feb 9: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi on Monday launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of “inciting genocide” against Muslims through a controversial social media video.

Addressing reporters in Guwahati, Gogoi urged the police to take suo motu cognisance of the matter, alleging that the chief minister was targeting a particular community.

Gogoi was referring to a video clip briefly shared on X by the Assam BJP and later deleted. The clip purportedly showed Sarma aiming and firing a rifle at two individuals—one wearing a skull cap and the other sporting a beard—with the caption “point-blank shot.”

“The Assam CM is inciting genocide against Muslims through his videos. Police must take suo motu cognisance of Sarma targeting a particular community and sharing vicious social media content,” Gogoi said.

The controversy comes amid an escalating war of words between the Congress MP and the chief minister ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, with both parties intensifying their political offensives.

Sarma, who has repeatedly alleged that Gogoi and his family have links with Pakistan, continued his attack on X earlier in the day.

“In today’s press conference, Gaurav Gogoi made a disclosure that even I was not previously aware of. Takshashila (Taxila) is not located in Islamabad, but in Rawalpindi District, Punjab,” Sarma wrote.

He questioned how Gogoi visited Takshashila if his Pakistan visa reportedly permitted travel only to Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad.

“Under Pakistan’s immigration rules, travel beyond visa-designated cities is not permitted without specific authorisation. So the question is simple and legitimate: Who facilitated his movement to Takshashila despite the apparent absence of visa clearance for Rawalpindi District?” Sarma said, adding that Rawalpindi also houses the Pakistan Army’s General Headquarters (GHQ).

The exchange marks the latest escalation in the bitter political confrontation between the two leaders as election rhetoric intensifies in the state.
