Tura, April 17: A vehicle belonging to the NPP MLA of Phulbari, SG Esmatur Mominin sustained damage after angry supporters of victorious Congress candidate in the GHADC election pelted stones during a scuffle on Thursday night post the election results to the GHADC.

The incident occurred in Chibinang town under Phulbari in the plain belt region of West Garo Hills at around 8:30 PM and the mob attack left the MLA’s vehicle considerably damaged. The NPP MLA was not in the vehicle when the incident took place.

Both sides have filed police FIRs into the incident and one person who sustained minor injury was discharged after first aid.

As per reports, the vehicle of Mominin, one Mahindra Scorpio bearing registration ML05-S-1976 was heading back to Phulbari from the Chibinang market when it crossed a public gathering felicitating the newly elected Congress MDC in the area known as Bholarbitha.

Congress supporters claim that one of the passengers from the vehicle flung out a water bottle which hit some supporters angering them.

Another angle to the story is that the vehicle went over a water-filled bottle that burst and splashed water on some supporters who were attending the felicitation programme.

The incident, accidental or otherwise, led to a confrontation and soon dozens of angry supporters surrounded the vehicle and attacked it with stones damaging glasses and the external body.

“There was a minor scuffle in which the car of the MLA was damaged but the vehicle was safely extracted from the place of the scuffle. Some people suffered minor injuries during the incident. Two FIRs have been filed and the case is being investigated,” said superintendent of police, WGH, Dr. MGR Kumar.

Habibuz Zaman of the Congress won the Shyamnagar seat in a shock defeat to the ruling NPP which fielded Tarif Ibrahim Sarkar, who is also the nephew of the Phulbari MLA.
