Tura, June 5: On a day dedicated to the planet, students, teachers and youth leaders in Rongkhon chose action over symbolism.
Marking World Environment Day, the Garo Students’ Union (GSU) Central Executive Committee, Headquarters Tura, joined hands with Rongkhon Secondary School and Don Bosco Rongkhon Higher Secondary School to organise a plantation drive and environmental awareness programme, bringing together young minds and community members in a shared commitment to a greener future.
Saplings were planted across school campuses and nearby areas as participants pledged to play their part in protecting the environment and preserving natural resources for future generations.

GSU leaders stressed the importance of collective action in addressing climate change and praised the schools for encouraging environmental responsibility among students. School authorities, in turn, reaffirmed their commitment to supporting initiatives that promote sustainability and community well-being.
The enthusiastic participation of students emerged as the highlight of the programme, reflecting a growing awareness among young people that environmental protection begins with everyday action.
The event concluded with participants pledging to nurture the saplings they planted — a small gesture carrying the promise of a greener Garo Hills in the years ahead.
