Nongpoh, Sept 8: The Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF), Northern Region, has issued a strong warning against the movement of heavy trucks along the Umrit–Umdu stretch of the 20 Mer road in Ri-Bhoi district, citing severe damage to the road and risks to public safety.

The road, which links Umdu village with Umrit, has been badly affected by frequent landslides and soil erosion. The situation has become particularly alarming near the narrow bridge along the route, raising serious safety concerns for daily commuters.

Led by General Secretary Afred Malai, along with 20 Mer Circle Secretary Vincent Sylliang and Adviser of Pahammawlein 20 Circle George Tangsang, the HNYF warned truck owners and drivers against transporting heavy loads on the road, stressing that such movement poses a grave danger to local residents.

The delegation also met Ri-Bhoi Additional Deputy Commissioner B. Ranee to present the grievances of the public over the unchecked plying of heavy vehicles. The ADC assured the group that the administration would take up the matter seriously.

Meanwhile, the HNYF has urged the district authorities to immediately restrict overloaded trucks on the road and enforce prohibitory measures to prevent further deterioration and ensure commuter safety.
