Guwahati, Mar 6: An Indian Air Force (IAF) Su-30MKI fighter jet crashed in a remote hilly area of Assam’s Karbi Anglong district, about 60 km from Jorhat, while on a training mission on Thursday evening. Search and rescue operations are currently underway.
The IAF has confirmed the crashing of its fighter jet on X.
According to officials, the aircraft had taken off from the Rowriah Air Force base in Jorhat and was last in contact with ground control at 7:42 PM.
Police sources said the fighter jet is suspected to have crashed near Nilip Block under Chokihola in Karbi Anglong, a difficult-to-access hill terrain.
Local residents reported hearing a massive explosion-like sound around 7 PM from the direction of the hills. The loud blast echoed across nearby villages, triggering panic among residents.
Eyewitnesses said the explosion was extremely loud, and some villagers also noticed a ball of fire rising from the hills shortly after the sound of the blast.
The suspected crash site is believed to be located far from human settlements, making it difficult for locals to reach the area immediately.
Meanwhile, search and rescue teams have been deployed, and efforts are underway to locate the aircraft and assess the situation. Further details are awaited.
