Dibrugarh, Aug 9: A nationwide outreach program is aiming to shape India’s next generation of health scientists.
Science came alive for more than 500 students from Assam and Tripura as they stepped into the world of real-time research under the ICMR-SHINE(Science & Health Innovation for the Nextgen Explorers).
Hosted at ICMR-RMRCNE in Dibrugarh and MRHRU in Khumlwng, the program drew enthusiastic participation from students of Classes 9 to 12, offering them a rare, immersive experience in cutting-edge health and biomedical research.
Designed to spark curiosity beyond textbooks, SHINE provided a hands-on introduction to scientific inquiry through lab tours, research exhibitions, model demonstrations, science quizzes, and interactive video sessions. The goal: to inspire young minds to pursue careers in science and public health, as part of India’s broader mission towards a Viksit Bharat by 2047.

“Science isn’t just in your books—it’s in our labs, in the field, and in our response to public health needs,” said Dr. Suman Kanungo, Director of ICMR-RMRCNE, urging students to see research as a dynamic, impactful career path.
To make science more relatable, ICMR introduced Dr. Curio, a cheerful mascot who guided students through their day, breaking down complex topics and adding a dose of fun to the learning journey.
Students also viewed four specially curated films showcasing ICMR’s breakthroughs—from the development of Covaxin, India’s indigenous COVID-19 vaccine, to the iDrone initiative for last-mile health delivery, India’s TB elimination mission, and a nationwide pandemic preparedness drill titled Vishanu Yudh Abhyas. They also got a glimpse of the MyHeart mobile app and research projects led by ICMR-RMRCNE.
Feedback from participants revealed a clear outcome: excitement, curiosity, and a newfound appreciation for the power of science.
