Golaghat eviction clears 146 families, reclaims forest land

Must read

Guwahati, Aug 9: In a fresh push to reclaim encroached forest areas, the Golaghat district administration on Friday evicted 146 families from No. 2 Negheribil village in Assam’s Dayang Reserve Forest. The drive, conducted jointly by the Forest Department, district officials, and security forces, recovered around 350–400 bighas of land.

The operation was carried out peacefully with support from the Nagaland administration, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and the Assam Police. Notices had been issued to 205 families on July 24, but 57 of them secured an extension from the Gauhati High Court until August 15. The remaining evictions are slated for August 16.

Friday’s action is part of a series of large-scale eviction drives in Golaghat over the past two weeks. On July 30, over 3,000 bighas were freed in Uriamghat’s Rengma Reserve Forest, followed by another 1,000 bighas from Nambor South Reserve Forest after removing more than 350 households. In total, more than 4,000 bighas have been reclaimed this month.

The Assam Government says the campaign aims to protect forest land and secure the rights of indigenous communities. Over 2,000 personnel — including Assam Police, CRPF, forest guards, and magistrates were deployed in operations.
