Dibrugarh, July 20: Security forces recovered an improvised explosive device (IED) on Saturday in Nongtaw village, Piyong Circle, Namsai district, Arunachal Pradesh. The army’s bomb disposal squad, part of the Dinjan-based 2 Mountain Division, successfully defused and later destroyed the device under extreme precautions. Jammers had been deployed at the scene to ensure safety.
The IED was discovered adjacent to a culvert and is believed to have been placed to target security forces. Sources indicate that ULFA (Independent) “self-styled Brigadier” Rupom Asom—recently arrested by security forces in Arunachal Pradesh—provided crucial intelligence during interrogation. His information reportedly included details about the outfit’s operations and identifying several overground workers (OGWs) assisting its activities. Security forces are initiating action against these individuals, officials confirmed.
There were intelligence reports of multiple ULFA (Independent) hit squads having infiltrated ahead of Independence Day celebrations. Meanwhile, on Thursday, Assam Rifles recovered a significant cache of arms and ammunition from Namdapha National Park in Changlang district.
