Shillong, June 5: In a significant milestone for higher education in the Northeast, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Shillong has earned the prestigious AACSB accreditation, placing the Meghalaya-based institution among an elite group of business schools worldwide that meet the highest international standards in management education.

Awarded by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International, the accreditation is widely regarded as the “gold standard” in management education. Fewer than six per cent of business schools globally have earned the distinction, making it one of the most respected quality benchmarks in the academic world.

The achievement places IIM Shillong among a select group of globally recognised business schools and strengthens India’s growing presence in international management education. The institute also joins the limited list of nearly 30 AACSB-accredited institutions in the country.

For Meghalaya and the Northeast, the recognition carries significance beyond rankings and credentials. It marks the first time a premier management institution from the region has secured one of the world’s most sought-after accreditations, further enhancing the Northeast’s visibility in the global higher education landscape.

AACSB accreditation is awarded only after a rigorous multi-year evaluation process that assesses institutions across teaching quality, curriculum design, faculty excellence, research output, learner success, strategic management, industry engagement and societal impact. Institutions are required to demonstrate continuous improvement and adherence to globally accepted academic standards.

Prof. Naliniprava Tripathy, Director (i/c) of IIM Shillong, described the accreditation as a collective achievement of the institute’s faculty, students, alumni and staff.

“This achievement reflects the collective effort and commitment of the entire IIM Shillong community towards earning global recognition. We remain committed to fulfilling our strategic vision and AACSB commitments over the next six years while continuously strengthening the institute’s global reputation,” he said.

Established in 2007, IIM Shillong has steadily built a reputation for sustainability-oriented management education, responsible leadership and research-driven learning. Often referred to as the “Campus in the Clouds” because of its location amidst the scenic hills of Meghalaya, the institute has emerged as one of India’s fastest-growing management schools.

Education experts say international accreditations such as AACSB increasingly influence global university partnerships, student mobility, faculty exchanges and research collaborations. Institutions that receive the accreditation often gain greater visibility among international recruiters, multinational corporations and academic networks.

The recognition is also expected to open new avenues for international collaborations, executive education programmes, global research initiatives and student exchange opportunities, further strengthening IIM Shillong’s international footprint.

The development comes at a time when Indian management institutes are seeking greater global integration and international benchmarking. Over the past few years, a growing number of Indian business schools have pursued international accreditations as part of efforts to compete with leading institutions across North America, Europe and Asia.

For IIM Shillong, however, the achievement represents more than a global certification.

From a young institute established less than two decades ago to becoming part of an exclusive network of internationally accredited business schools, the journey reflects the growing academic ambitions of the Northeast itself. In a region often underrepresented in global education conversations, IIM Shillong’s entry into the AACSB-accredited league places Meghalaya firmly on the world map of management education.
