Inquiry ordered into food poisoning at JNV Rymbai

Must read

Shillong, Nov 29: The East Jaintia Hills District Administration has ordered a high-level inquiry into the suspected food poisoning incident at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) Rymbai, where dozens of students have fallen ill since November 22. A five-member committee led by SDO (Sadar) Manish Kumar has been tasked with conducting a thorough investigation and submitting a comprehensive report within a week.

The inquiry committee—comprising officials from Food Safety, Health, School Education, and Child Protection—will begin its work on December 1. The move comes after multiple reports of students being hospitalised with diarrhoea, vomiting, and skin infections, triggering widespread concern among parents and community leaders.

The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) has sharply condemned what it describes as the “hazardous” and unhygienic conditions at the residential school. Citing escalating distress calls from parents, the JSU conducted an inspection led by its education secretary, Khynroo Bocheru Mi Pohsnem, who described the situation as alarming.

“During the inspection, the head boy confirmed 39 students are currently on sick leave, with over 20 reporting sick just this morning,” Pohsnem said. The union also met the Medical Officer at PHC Rymbai, who confirmed that the sudden spike in diarrhoea cases was consistent with food poisoning, adding that recurring scabies infections point to a complete collapse of hygiene and sanitation protocols within the campus.

Calling the situation “unacceptable,” the JSU has served the school authorities a 15-day ultimatum to resolve the issues and ensure student safety. The Union warned that it would escalate its agitation if corrective measures are not taken immediately.
