Shillong, Oct 16: A high-level delegation from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the Sports Authority of India (SAI) visited Shillong on October 15 to assess preparations and chart key strategies for the upcoming 39th National Games, Meghalaya 2027.
The review meeting was chaired by Dr. Vijay Kumar D, Commissioner & Secretary, Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, in the presence of Richard Yanthan, Joint Secretary; Matseiwdor War Nongbri, Vice President, Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA); D.D. Shira, Director, Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs; and John F. Kharshiing, Working President, MSOA.
Vijay Kumar highlighted Meghalaya’s sports ecosystem, infrastructure development and readiness for the upcoming 39th National Games.
The visiting delegation included Amitabh Sharma, Executive Council Member, IOA; Sahdev Yadav, Treasurer, IOA & President, Indian Weightlifting Federation; Mamta Shree Ojha, Director, Khelo India, SAI; and Shrinivas Malekar, Deputy Director, Khelo India, SAI.
Amitabh Sharma reaffirmed IOA’s commitment to the National Games and plans for 36 sporting disciplines with scope for expansion.
Sahdev Yadav, Treasurer, IOA emphasized the importance of National Games in fostering sports development and infrastructure in Meghalaya, assuring IOA’s full support and cooperation.
The meeting discussed several key aspects of the Games, including expansion of the sports programme and inclusion of local and demonstration sports, review of progress on infrastructure development in Shillong, Tura, and Jowai and strengthening state sports federations, particularly for underrepresented disciplines
Officials emphasized that, as the host state, Meghalaya athletes will be eligible to compete in all sporting disciplines, irrespective of qualification norms — a move aimed at boosting local participation and enthusiasm.
Officials said the visit marks an important step in ensuring Meghalaya’s readiness to host a successful National Games.
