Shillong, July 6: Meghalaya is stepping up efforts to strengthen grassroots healthcare through regular Jan Arogya Samiti (JAS) meetings at Ayushman Arogya Mandir–Health and Wellness Centres (AAM-HWCs), promoting community participation in the planning and management of local health services.
The meetings bring together village residents, traditional headmen, frontline health workers and district officials to identify local health priorities, improve service delivery and address social determinants of health.
Highlighting the initiative, the Meghalaya Health Department said the JAS meetings are fostering greater public participation and collective action to make healthcare more responsive to community needs.

“Across Meghalaya, JAS meetings at AAM-HWCs are fostering active community participation, strengthening local healthcare management and encouraging collective action to address health needs at the grassroots. Together, we are building healthier and more resilient communities,” the department said in a post on X.
Officials said the initiative has enhanced community ownership, transparency and accountability in the functioning of local healthcare facilities. The forums are helping improve access to essential health services, promote preventive healthcare and provide a platform for residents to raise local health concerns.
“The active participation of community members has fostered greater ownership, transparency and accountability in the management and oversight of local healthcare facilities. From improving access to essential health services to promoting preventive healthcare and addressing community concerns, the Jan Arogya Samitis are playing a vital role in ensuring that health services remain responsive to the needs of the people,” an official said.
The official added that the collaborative model is empowering communities to become active partners in strengthening public health systems and improving health outcomes across the state through dialogue, shared responsibility and collective action.
